Books I'm Buying: Where Have All the Leaders Gone?

I can’t wait to get a copy of Lee Iacocca’s new book, Where Have All The Leaders Gone?

It looks AMAZING. Borders Books has an excerpt here.

Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We’ve got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, “Stay the course.”

Stay the course? You’ve got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I’ll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!

Bargasms…

I just picked up my Bar/BRI books. They weigh about 700 billion pounds. Why am I doing this again?

I decided to try making something new – so I took some green tea soba noodles, a can of tuna, and some Pietro’s Shoyu Dressing and tossed it together.

It ended up being pretty good.

Things I Like: Audrey Kawasaki

And no, it’s not just ’cause it’s Japanese-y.

Audrey Kawasaki’s art is definitely Japanese-inspired, but it’s also hauntingly beautiful. I’m thinking of buying a piece to hang on my walls, if I had any more space, in a few months.

I especially like this one:

She has a blog, too – http://i-seldom-do.livejournal.com/

Vista Auto-Tuning (Hooray, Fixed!)

Finally, I got a fix for a bunch of slowdowns I’d been seeing – turns out Vista has something called “Receive Window Auto-Tuning.”

This is really smart – except most hardware out there is still dumb. As soon as I found this site and followed the directions, I was in like Flynn.

Make sure you’re running as an Administrator (can open a command window as Administrator) and execute the following command at the prompt:

“netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled”

Changing “disabled” to “normal” will re-enable this setting, should you want to turn it back on again. The following command will list the status of the current TCP settings:

“netsh interface tcp show global”

Review: SavingsAccounts.Com

So, some of you know that I’ve recently been looking for a new place to store my money. I had been with ING for a while, but when I heard about SavingsAccounts.com I ended up moving my money over to HSBC.

Why is SavingsAccounts.com so useful? First, you can check out all the rates on the web at once, from all the major banks – ING, HSBC, CitiBank, Bank of America, and so forth. Second, they’ve got a great list of financial articles on their resources page, and they have plenty of good information there. Finally, they’ve taken the time to make the page simple and easy to use without having a lot of extraneous junk – you can see what you’re looking for on the site right away.

Oh, and the little piggy bank logo is pretty cute, too.

This article is a paid advertisement, although some research has been done by this website.

NY Mag: Nipple Tint Goes Mass (Appeal, I think)

From New York Magazine:

“In just one more sign of the stripperization of the Everywoman, Benefit’s Benetint, conceived in the seventies for an exotic dancer to color lips and cheeks, is now also being sold at Sephora and elsewhere as a ‘kiss-proof and water-resistant’ nipple tint. ‘Women want nipples to be pert and fresh-looking, and this shade makes them appear that way,’ Benefit spokeswoman Alison Haljun says. ‘For a long time, the idea of a ripe, rosy nipple has been considered appealing and alluring.’ But aren’t the nipples usually undisplayed? ‘Even if you don’t show it off, you know they’re rosier and more perky,’ she says. Sonia Ossorio, president of NOW in New York, says, ‘I can barely keep up with keeping my nails manicured, much less this nauseating onslaught of new beauty standards. While women are spending their energy, time, and money getting their areolas just the right shade of pink, the Supreme Court is getting more conservative and closer to taking away our long-fought right to reproductive choice’.”

I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP. I am all about protecting reproductive choice…but seriously, NOW-lady, that was the wrong place to make your point. Although I suppose people are now making a point about it, and it’s definitely a way to convince Justice Thomas to agree with your point.

Franklin Square Park

Philadelphia has put a lot of energy, lately, into making areas that were originally city centers into beautiful parks. Logan Square (which is a circle) has been completely redone, and they’re improving the Aviator Park directly in front of the Franklin Institute as part of that.

Well, today I learned that Franklin Square, which is near the Ben Franklin Bridge and is apparently part of the Independence National Park area, has been improved as well, with two playgrounds, a carousel, and…MINI GOLF!

YES!

I Am Not Making This Up (Edition 5)

This image is a screenshot of a newspaper article I was linked to…notice the surprisingly interesting juxtaposition of headline and image.

Dick Cheney is a Sodomist

The original page is located here, but it probably changes depending on the top national story.
